And that’s the end of chapter 10!
As of tomorrow, The Fancy Adventures of Jack Cannon has been going for 4 years! I’d like to thank everyone who has been with me up until now, words alone can’t express what your comments and support have meant to me, and I look forward to telling you more ridiculous stories.
As for what’s coming next, the comic is going to be going through a little bit or restructuring. For one thing, the one comic a week update has suuuucked. As a final product the comic moves quickly enough, and while necessarily, the once a week updated were just so slow. There are several ways I can address his problem, and here’s the first: I’m going to be experimenting with black and white, which should be able to bring the comic back up to at least 2 comics a week, (ideally I’d like 3, but since heading to uni this comic really has become a labor of love. Maybe I could pull it off, but I don’t want to make any promises.)
Another thing I could do is release comics in blocks. Maybe five or ten pages at once, with no solid update time. Obviously you’d have to wait longer, but when the story did update it would be multi page (or a whole chapter) and colour would remain which is something I have a feeling people will miss.
Or maybe not. Am I wrong? Let me know!
So, anyway, what I’m going to do now Is take a month off! It will technically only be a hiatus for you, not me, as I will still be working on pages and finalizing story elements and working on a new webpage which, dare I say it, won’t be terrible?! God, I hope so.

Not sure which of your suggestions I’d like better, I’d personally wouldn’t enjoy Black and White though that wouldn’t stop me from reading. Releasing the comics in block may work but you have to have some sort of cycle about it or else people could just completely forget to come back. Like say have 3 weeks of releases and 1-2 weeks catch up? Have you also consider no longer shading the characters, would that cut off enough time?

That, or all the blue 1s and 0s Gavin exploded into are reforming again…I mean, it’s not like they’ve blown up the Hacker Base (In Space) yet. And a BSOD isn’t the end by any means…
Also Jamie, not sure how the comic would look in black and white, but I can see it working. But I definitely want you to stick to a constant release once or twice a week. Godspeed!

I’ll still be checking every day like an idiot, even though it only updated once a week, I’m always anticipating what happens next.
I’d still read in black and white, I would miss the color a little, but hey, if it moves the story along quicker, that’s not a bad trade off.

Coloring is nice – but multiple comics have made the transition to black and white or grayscale without losing fans.

I’d prefer steady B&W to big updates, unless maybe you have a way to have the comic point to the first comic that was included in the update. Still, I’d prefer steady to infrequent-but-big. I have also seen some good B&W/grayscale comics.

Comic updates. persistent, consistent works for me, when you have a bonus update, I’d be thrilled. Some comics work in B&W, I think yours wouldn’t.
Try a few and get some feed back.
I really think you’d have more readers if some of the other consistent readers ALSO clicked on that VOTE button more then 1 X a week. Any comic to get in the top 100 always picks up extra readers, it is the only advertising I seem to note, I sure don’t look for new stuff to read past #200… to many dead end comics there and I’m left hanging.

If it meant there would be color, I would prefer the updates in bulk. The comic is super fantastic, and I’ll continue to read either way.

In my opinion, regular updates would work a lot better, and black and white really wouldn’t bother me that much.

Oh, come off it. A little while back, Grin tried to stop Jack’s heart, and he ended up passing out for a while. Given what he endured up in the base, now…
I’d rather regular black and white than block color, but do try and see if you can’t simplify your coloring process…

I’d prefer there to be color. I like the idea of bulk updates, but the problem with that is many people will forget to check for new updates when they arrive. Perhaps an e-mail service would be a good idea?

Personally, I’d prefer the mass block color updates; however I’ve seen many a good webcomic sputter out and die from trying to do this, and as one of the *first* webcomics I ever fully committed to reading and following, I’d hope Jack Cannon won’t harbor the same fate X_x

i wouldn’t care about black and white, since i know what the char. look like and what colors they are already. I’d just prefer more often updates.

I would enjoy the comic much less in black and white. For consistency, I think sticking with color is the best option. Although, even if you did switch to black and white I’d still read. I’d rather have updates once or twice a month, in color, than weekly black and white updates. Regardless of what you go with, it’s important to stick to a schedule. If you go with bulk updates choose one/two specific days of the month to upload the pages.

Personally, I would still read it if it was black and white, but I would really miss the color. If that means large chunks with longer waits to save the color, I’m for it. It would be a shame to have part of the “book” in color and the rest in black and white. My OCD would go nuts ;D
As for the story line, I’m guessing Jones who works at Mega Intelligence and can’t leave his post (http://fancyadventures.com/2010/05/17/page-193/) is the one who anti-hacked Jack. Now that Jack has undergone so much hackitude in the space station, the anti-hack-ation has just broken and his is normal once again. That is the 1s and 0s at the bottom.

I will continue reading, regardless of coloring (although I do enjoy the color…). You have crafted an immensely entertaining narrative, and I looked forward to each update. This next month will be painful, but good job and I wish you luck.

My experience with webcomics, just as a reader; mind you, is that releasing in multiple comics in blocks tends not to work well. The only exceptions seem to be if there’s one day a week (or month) where the comic updates with multiple comics.
Also, just realising, this is probably the first time I’ve commented on your comic. So, I should take the time to say that I love it. It’s a really cool concept and I really enjoy the scenes with Jack’s parents.

You could even re-release any black &White comics you make, in colour at a later time when you are obviously able to do so in a book or something and make a profit.

I’d like the block updates. I CAN’T TAKE WAITING FOR ANYMORE PLOT MAN! Then again, black and white sounds pretty cool… do whatever’s most convenient I suppose. Anything is better than this excruciating schedule. How do you expect me to wait a week when the fate of Jack- nay, the fate of THE WORLD- is at stake!

Your entire comic has made leaps and bounds as to its quality. It was never bad- but it is always getting better. Your art is easy on the eyes in a fun and loveable style. The color has been great- yet STORY STORY NEED STORY like the Meaty poster above me. I’d rather see a black & white bi-weekly update instead of a lump at once. The big update is instant gratification for about ten/fifteen minutes, but then the reader is left wanting more(see- Lackadaisy). That is good on you! But you could severely hurt the comic junkies (I come here several times a day and I know your schedule)- we are fragile and excitable creatures. Too much at once could be a severe stimulatory overload- and with the fix cut off, we could resort to huffing SMBC. With a bi-weekly b&w update, you could stave off our untimely demise as well as keep your hit counter treading water(if it wouldn’t double- people like me knowing there are two updates coming will still click five times a day to see if it magically came early).
Also an idea you may want to tinker with – a very low key comic(specifically I’m thinking of the style of Ctrl Alt Del- sillies). Just little situational blips of your character’s lives.
My two cents summed up- go with more updates for less content and move your story. Franpa notes you may also add color later- perhaps to a tangible version. We would all pre-order.

Something you may or may not have considered that has a little less to do with fan preference and more to do with the income that keeps your site running…if your hosting, like many sites, is supported by ads (either entirely or partially)…well, switching to block updates is going to decrease ad support as hits decrease.
On the other hand, if you have the biweekly updates, or even something similar that is keeping readers checking in on a regular basis, that will encourage advertisers to keep hosting on your site, as you will have people steadily checking in…primarily on the two update days, but also those who miss the update day checking in the day after or such.
Of course, if your hosting is financed through another source and/or taken care of in, say, yearly sums, this could be a completely moot factor in your decision-making.

Personally, a chapter a month or so would work slightly better for me. Black and white would be okay, except that it might be harder to tell some characters apart without different hair colors. But the bottom line is I would keep reading either way.

As long as this continues I will be happy, but I would prefer it if the colour stayed.
I love this story and the characters are awesome. Keep up the good work and if it has to stay at one page per week, then so be it.

Good B&W require about as much work as color. Trust me deciding what color people dress doesn’t take time. In addition, the lack of color creates new unforeseen problems such as the need to describe the obvious: “What is that in his face? Dirt?” “Its blood…” etc. This comic is great, but color or B&W is not the issue. Sadly a comic start to rarefy when author is getting trouble getting them out. It could be due to many reasons. I vote for not doing it in blocks. The work in blocks is harder on the author, who needs to work longer to get stuff out and that is heavier on the motivation. Feedback is pretty much the major motivator for a web-comics. The author needs it to continue, and with it also 1/10 of constructive criticism. Those are important and working in blocks reduce that. The best solution I think is for the author whom I assume is also the one who draws it, legate the coloring of his works to another person. That is different than doing a B&W version because he would draw the lines and maybe thicken them as he likes, the colorist would do the rest.

Personally I love seeing the comic in color, it just fits the “slightly deranged Saturday Morning Cartoon” vibe better. 😀
So between the two, block updates would be preferred here.

I’d rather have a few pages of color than lots of pages of B&W. Without color we wouldn’t get your magnificent uses of it, like those nifty blue death-lights and the Hacker’s color scheme!

I read black and white manga series so I would not really mind the transition to black and white… That is assumeing you can pull it off with your art style.
Ultimately whatever works best. I’m not that picky.

Late to the party because… just because, dude, don’t give me that look.
Alright, color or black-and-white wouldn’t matter to me at all, though I’d definitely prefer a *proper* black and white comic, rather than just putting up your lines uncolored and unshaded. And if you’re doing a *proper* black and white comic (as opposed to simply not coloring OR shading) I really can’t see it saving you any time. But even then, if you do go the no color or shading route, I’d still read and not really give it a second thought.
The block updating, though… that’s what has spurred me to comment. Please do not switch to block updating. I have attempted to read many comics in the past that used or switched to block updating, and it is awful. I don’t want five pages in one update, once every two months (which turns into two pages in one update, once every three months… it looks good on paper, but it doesn’t work). One update a week is slow, but much preferred. Block updating is a drain on the readers; on their enthusiasm for your comic and willingness to ever bother checking back. Worse, it’s the bane of an author’s motivation to sit down and work.
Block updating is effectively an extended hiatus after EVERY update. You know what hiatuses do to readership? Yeah…

I’ve been reading this comic for 2 years and I love it. I don’t comment much (like nothing. at all) because I don’t know much English (I’m from Chile, a spanish speaking country) but I feel the need to present you an idea.
I read a spanish webcomic in which the Author made a sort of hiatus after every chapter and he didn’t start releasing the pages until he was done with the chapter. The important difference with the “block” idea is that he didn’t publish all the pages at once, but in ‘intervals’ (Don’t know if I’m using the right word), like your twice a week updates (could be more), but with the chapter already done.
I love your colouring style and it would be really strange reading the comic without it, since it started in color, so I would prefer the ‘block’ updates. Though I feel the updates should be rationed for better apreciation of the webcomic form.
