The “motion lines” are generally drawn to the trailing edge of the moving object. To me it would seem that Gavin is actually stepping back.

Gavin is all that’s left of Grin’s brother. A distorted soul, a twisted, emotionless memory of what once was.
Maybe it was developing the first true Hack. Could’ve even simple fatigue from tireless work. Perhaps, even, it was destiny.
But either way. A boy came in, never to leave, and Gavin emerged, the personification of everything that he cared about ~ everything else was simply left to rot.
The thing is, he only has a single half of his creator’s mind. And its definetly not the emotional right one.
So maybe Jack can win. But I doubt it. It’d be like defeating the entity who’s only purpose in life is – seemingly – to defeat you. But not after seeing how far you can be pushed before breaking, of course.
… Oh wait. Herucles. Chell. Counter-examples.
Only was even warped into space and survived.

@Xaviertrix: metal sonic. his purpose is to defeat sonic, as is robotnik’s, yet neither of them have succeeded, robotnik came close, twice infact, but still fails every time. metal can keep up with sonic, but can never defeat him. because while metal knows every move sonic has made in the past, sonic can come up with new moves on the fly, metal can’t compensate for that. so… i’m pretty sure jack CAN win.
