Good job to everyone who called Gavin blue-screening. It should really be a Kernel Panic, but that wouldn’t have given off a cool blue lighting effect. (This is how I base all of my decisions in life.)

    @FanXplodion … YEP !!

  10. HiroOdan

I am calling it. Gavin becomes even more unstoppable but in the end he becomes something that can be punched, in the face.

  11. Imakuni

Ah, BSOD. So Gavin is run on Windows.

  12. Delusional

I’m more worried about the ENVIRONMENT and OXYGEN that Gavin is using to KEEP EVERYONE ALIVE.

He’s… blue now. Oh gawd, and now that song’s in my head again.

    NO……NOOO!!!!! NOGODDAMMITNO!!!

Gavin is a puss-keg running a 98 kernel? There went all respect for him.

  16. shadowinthelight

Further proof of the evils of Micro$oft? 🙂

  17. Ignis

Gavin is Harmed- kill to be confirmed! Can I get a Yosh?

    YOOOOOOOOSH!

  18. Skydron

    Gavin is…

Blue da ba dee da ba die da ba dee…

  19. barrage7667

….well thats anticlimactic. Now everyone suffocates/freezes/explodes/etc as they realize they are IN SPACE WITHOUT GAVINS HACKS TO SUPPORT THEM. But hey, Gavin is gone…for now

  20. BAppleman

He’s got an offsite backup, and an emergency transfer system, He’ll reboot in a minute or two at a different location. The end of this story can’t possibly be this anti-climatic. I mean if Gavin dies, the hackers are no longer a threat, no hackers, no story, right?

  21. isaac

    Uh oh……blue screen of death

  22. James

I Reckon that … Jack should ( now that Gavin’s Kaput ) drop his Dacks and FART in his face !!!!!! I Reckon ; D

  23. Ludo

    True hackers don’t use Windows!

  24. Kramegame

To those complaining about it not being anti-climactic, we defeated the non-threat repeat villain (Craig), got tele-ported into space, on a base that barely exists in this dimension, Max is barely breathing, we’ve discovered Gavin’s back story, turned his girlfriend to good (indirectly), the running joke has reached fruition, Jack is heavily bleeding (internally I might add) from decompression, and now they just caused a system error to what may be the only thing holding the space base in orbit.

HOWEVER, a climax is just that. It does not mean that it’s over.

  25. Meaty

Man, this bring Villain BSOD to a whole new meaning.

This is hilarious, I lol’d at least. BRING ON THE NEXT VILLAIN!

I didn’t have any problems with this, it wasn’t really an anti-climax. And Max is still alive so yaaaay, he gets to live to facepunch another day

  26. Jedai

I must admit that this gives me the creep when I try imagining this from Gavin perspective… You’re suddenly losing yourself, losing access to your memory, to your essence. That’s a bit akin to really bad head wounds where there may be damages to your basic personality and knowledge. I’ve always found that this was one of the worse way to go.

  27. Logos

And so the final thought that passed through Gavin’s mind was… “I am Error.”

  28. ManofAwesome

I wonder what he’s thinking at this point…

  29. Remzal

    @manofAwesome

probably something along of the lines of “fucking windows!!!!”

  30. Jerel

But wait, if the space station was hacked into existence, then it would disappear with Gavin right?

  31. Scidude

BSoD came in handy for the first time ever!
By the way, as per the comment text, if he is dual booting windows and Linux, then he could still get the BSoD instead of a Kernel Panic if he was running in Windows at the time.
Honestly, I’m quite surprised there were no memory leaks over the who-knows-how-many-years he was running.

  32. Rachel

While blue screen of death is sometimes fatal, it’s not a definite. He might have a back-up somewhere, or he can be restarted with a earlier version of himself. I have a feeling he may be a villain like Brainiac, you think he’s gone but there’s always a back-up of him somewhere.
And maybe if all the hackers work together, they can use the transportation beam (or whatever it’s called) to get people back to Earth. Grin will have to take over as leader and with her there they can do it!
Jack and Max are going to need some serious medical attention. Jack most of all. Bleeding from the eyes and ears is pretty bad!

  33. cy414

your hdd gets knocked hard enough during operation & your os could lock up & need to be restarted. an always on system.
a raid 2 or raid 5 configuration of servers & a seperate backup would be expected.

my question is, will gavin go all MCP or nexus on us next?

  34. othorlimmis

    CALLED it!

  35. Unknown

Gavin disappearing shouldn’t undo all of his hacking… not unless this is one of those stories where killing someone undoes all their hacking. Which this might be.

Also, why the hell didn’t Gavin the nigh-invincible reality-altering super genius cover up his one weakness with a scorching-hot energy barrier or hide it in an inaccessible pocket dimension (or both)? Or, you know, have security guards take shifts protecting it? Come on! At least tell me he filled it with repair nanobots.

Anyway, this might be the perfect opportunity for a heel face turn on Gavin’s part. Just got to reload an older version of Gavin.per, one that isn’t evil yet. He doesn’t even have to feel guilty, since he can just blame everything on “the other Gavin”. It’s almost guaranteed that there’s a backup somewhere just itching to be activated – what’s important is how old the backup is. If Gavin was too paranoid to leave around a copy of his entire existence for enemies to steal and use against him, then I’m sure there’s still an intact copy of the “original” orange-haired blue-shirt’d Gavin. Though even that Gavin seemed a little evil.

  36. Trieo

Small but important thing to note here. His hacked up body is still there. It cannot read the data, but the body is still there. Meaning the station won’t wink out of existence.

  37. H_T

This put a smile on my face. 🙂

  38. OmegaForte

As I said before, the idea of a backup is perposterous. The ammount of storage the gavin image alone would take up is nearly immeasurable, since we have no way to quantify the interworkings of the human brain. Let alone to map the simple functions of moving a finger, taking a step, flexing a hand…Even before compiling that code would take up petabytes if not exabytes. Far more than any one person could code in a hundred lifetimes. In UF-8, the typical standard, there are eight bytes per character. 125,000,000,000. That’s one hundred twenty five billion keystrokes. Per Petabyte. The largest storage system in existence, the IBM Hive system is 125 Petabytes. Assuming the gavin image is half of that, since we have no real way to quantify the human element, he would likely need twice that much storage to comprise the back-end services and functions that he does WITHOUT his hacking superpower. With that… I don’t think there’s even a way to glean how much space that would take.

The idea of a backup is ludicrous.

  39. gangler

Almost as ludicrous as the idea of digitizing a person in the first place. Or for that matter the idea of transfering a human conscience into a cloned body. Both aren’t exactly unheard of in fiction. Let’s not spend all day worrying about all the roadblocks that would have to be overcome to actually accomplish it. If there weren’t roadblocks like that we’d be doing it right now in real life.

Besides which we’re talking about a guy with technomagic. A reality warper. An existence that’s clearly stated to be in the fringe of even theoretical possibility even by the universe’s own science. You’d need a pretty solid amount of in-comic evidence to say conclusively that the guy can’t do something. You’ve provided exactly nothing that’s been referenced in comic.

  40. Dameon

    Blue scream of death!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!

  41. Rusty Knight

Way to go kids. You broke Gavin. I hope you got the money to fix him.

  42. neon5162

    DING fries are done

  43. Biscuit

Did any one else read this in the voice of the fact sphere from portal 2?

  44. dreddy71

gotta think more network style. those computers that were smashed are the local node that was controlling that physical embodiment of gavin, meanwhile the “stored gavin” is likely a beast of the internet: the only way to eliminate him is to end the internet.
someone spoke of storage space, and at the same time was breaking subsystems down. if you can break it down to just a few megabytes, span across every computer hooked up to the internet im sure we can see numbers much larger than any single collection

im rambling and sleepy great combo.

  45. Remzal

    @dreddy71
._.’ am I the only one thinking megaman.exe parodies are going to show up in the future?

  46. Johnny Whoa

Wait, if he shuts down… won’t the whole hacker base? Leaving them kind of trapped in the empty void of space?

    NEAT.

  47. aqua

the big question is if he backed himself up and how long till he reboots

  48. Totz the Plaid

Jamie: Do you have any particular “theme songs” in mind for Gavin and Max? Just curious.

  49. ThisGuy

Gavin: Instead of going out with a bang, he goes with a

    Ding.

  50. ASP

To the people who say that Gavin can’t possibly have multiple backups because that would take up to much space, remember, this is a series that has reality warpers, animated scarves, and a top secret government organization willing to hire a dude named Maximum Facepuncher, this is not very high on the scale of scifi hardness

  51. L

Figured quite some time a go that he was a virtualized human being with all the hackers saying he’s different

  52. dizit

Requesting high resolution version of the last panel

  53. Huh?

And thus was Gavin defeated, and his hacker group disband.
Anonymous was pleased to announce that once again, the majority of hackers wore Guy Fawkes Masks

  54. yoshierider

An interesting way to end a fantastic battle. Now I’m wondering about what happens next.

  55. Zeb

The good old BSOD. I would have thought he would use a very basic version of linux.

  56. Kittenykat

Now only one, very important question remains, which I put forward for you all to consider carefully:

    …was Gavin a Load-Bearing Boss?

  57. Lunar

Yo, Jamie. Can I turn that last panel into a T-Shirt?

  58. Arch Angel

    I’m sorry, I can’t resist.
    FRIES ARE DONE!

  59. Brandenfascher

I don’ think Gavin was the only hacker left on the station. If the station will potentially disappear with his “death”, there might be another particular (and still alive) hacker who could prevent that, if I’m correct. If it is who I think it is, I think everyone (besides maybe Jack and/or Max?) is getting back to earth safely.

  60. Lunar

This comic is missing but one thing: a next button

  61. gangler

I was getting the impression that all all hacker powers were borrowed from Gavin. So after he dies everyone loses their powers and nobody can pick up the slack.

  62. Flik

I congratulate everyone for having the willpower not to make a Vista joke.

  63. Crestlinger

    …and Then you explode!

  64. newllend(voidSN)

He fucking blue screened ROFL oh god that’s gold.
